Digestive Health
Procedures performed in the Center for Digestive Health include endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy treating diseases and conditions including:
- Colon Cancer Screening
- Esophageal conditions including Heartburn, reflux (GERD), Barrett's esophagus, swallowing disorders, achalasia, and esophageal cancer
- Stomach and small intestinal conditions including Abdominal pain, nausea, ulcers, stomach cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and Celiac disease (intestinal malabsorption) Dyspepsia (indigestion), Portal hypertension
- Large intestine or colon conditions including Ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diarrhea, and constipation
- Pancreas, liver, and gallbladder conditions including Gallstones, pancreatitis, cancer of the pancreas, hepatitis, cirrhosis and other liver related conditions
- Endoscopic services including diagnostic and therapeutic management of upper and lower GI bleeding
- Advanced techniques for endoscopic diagnosis and palliation of tumors for colon or esophageal cancer
Screening Guidelines
The American Cancer Society recommends beginning at age 50, men and women who are at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should have one of the 5 screening options below:
- a fecal occult blood test (FOBT)* or fecal immunochemical test (FIT) every year, or
- flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, or
- an FOBT* or FIT every year plus flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years (Of these first 3 options, the combination of FOBT or FIT every year plus flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years is preferable), or
- double-contrast barium enema every 5 years, or
- colonoscopy every 10 years
*For FOBT, the take-home multiple sample method should be used.
