Methodist Richardson Medical Center offers several courses to help you and your family prepare for the birth of your baby. Whether you are pregnant with your first child or are already a parent, you will find these courses interesting and helpful.

This course is designed to prepare you and your partner for the experience of labor and delivery. Prepared childbirth classes can enhance every woman's birth experience by eliminating the fear of the unknown, developing pain management skills and learning about birth options. This class covers:
Week 1: Determining labor; Stage I labor (early, active, transition); the coach's role; medications of labor; relaxation/breathing techniques.
Week 2: Fetal monitoring; episiotomy; forceps (vacuum suction); Stage II labor (pushing; breathing techniques, the coach's role); vaginal birth movie.
Week 3: Stage III labor; care of infant immediately after birth; inducing labor; relaxation/labor rehearsal; tour of Richardson Regional’s maternity unit.
Week 4: Preparing planned/unplanned cesarean births; cesarean movie; postpartum.
Week 5: Newborn care including: appearance, reflexes, choosing the baby's doctor, when to call the doctor, bathing, diapering, dressing, feeding, burping, soothing, playing/stimulating your infant, sleeping and new parent adjustment.
The cost for this course is $85 per couple. Classes are offered on Wednesday evenings for five weeks from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. or on Saturdays for two weeks from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If this is not your first child, you may want to take our refresher course. This course offers a way for you to brush-up on your relaxation/breathing techniques and hints to help you through labor stages, as well as remind your coach about what his/her duties will be during your birth experience.
The cost for this course is $50 per couple. This three-session mini-course is offered within the 5 week childbirth class. Couples typically attend class 3, 4 and 5 of the 5-week series.

If your infant stopped breathing, or began to choke, would you know what to do? The infant CPR class is designed to instruct parents and/or caregivers on how to respond to infants who are in life threatening situations. This class also focuses on preventing accidents from occurring, by instructing parents and/or caregivers on how to create a safe environment in and around the home. You will learn: how to give aid to a choking infant; life-saving techniques of infant CPR; and tips on child-proofing your home.
The cost for this course is $30 per person or $45 per couple. These classes are offered on Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Remember to make your reservations early! Ideally, couples should plan to FINISH their classes 4 to 6 weeks prior to their due date. To register for classes or to inquire about our courses, please call the Education Department at (972) 498-7697.
Cancellation Policy
We understand that circumstances arise that may require you to cancel or reschedule your parent education classes. If you must cancel, you may do so up to 10 business days prior to the class start date and your registration fee will be returned. If you must cancel less than 10 business days in advance, your registration fee will be refunded minus a $10 processing charge.
Hospital Tour of Maternity Unit
A tour of the Maternity unit is included when couples take either the 5- or 2-week Prepared Childbirth series. Couples NOT attending the Prepared Childbirth series can attend a free tour on the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. Tours will meet in the hospital’s main lobby. No registration is required for attending a hospital tour.
